The Latest Trends in Credit Card Fraud
Mar. 23, 2026
March is Fraud Prevention Month and is a crucial time for awareness of the latest trends in credit card fraud. Credit card fraud is on the rise, and it is rapidly evolving with new methods to gain access to cardholders’ credit card information. Here are the latest trends to be aware of to keep your bank and customers’ credit card account information secure.
The Latest Trends in Credit Card Fraud
- Social Media Survey Scam
This scam is facilitated through deceptive advertisements promoting popular products from various large retailers. Fraudsters create fake social media profiles claiming to be former employees of the retailer, and in the comments section of the advertisement post a comment noting consumers can receive heavily discounted products by completing a shorty survey. A link to the survey is provided in the comment and directs the consumers to a fraudulent payment webpage requesting their payment account data to verify their identity to receive the “reward”. The fraudsters use the stolen payment credentials to make fraudulent transactions or enroll the victims in fraudulent recurring subscriptions.
- Romance Scam
This scam leverages fake online dating platforms promoting deceptive trial offers. Fraudsters use scripted bots to communicate with victims and convince victims to purchase low-cost “trials” using their payment credentials. The fraudsters convert the trials into high-value recurring subscriptions processed through collusive merchants that are difficult for the victim to cancel.
- Impersonating Cardholders’ Financial Institutions
This sophisticated scam involves fraudsters impersonating cardholders’ financial institutions over the phone. Fraudsters are even making it appear like they are calling from the financial institution’s phone number, to try to gain credit card details to make fraudulent transactions.
