A partner, not a competitor

Chartered as a national bank on October 5, 1988, Bankers' Bank of Kansas became the 15th of the current 18 bankers' banks. Initiating business with just 36 banks investing $1.5 million in capital and surplus, our equity capital now exceeds our first day total assets. With an investor base expanded by over 50%, BBOK currently provides correspondent banking services to over 200 banks throughout the state. This growth reflects our ongoing commitment to the vision of BBOK's founders: providing progressive, quality service and serving as a strong, steady partner to the community banks of Kansas.

What is a bankers' bank?

Under the law, a bankers' bank is a commercial bank owned only by other depository institutions (except for directors' qualifying shares), authorized only to do business with depository institutions, their officers, directors and staff. Regulations prohibit any bank from owning over 5% of the voting stock of a bankers' bank, thereby assuring wide ownership and preventing control from lying in the hands of any one bank, group of banks, or area of the state.

What can Bankers' Bank do for you?

As corporate "megabanks" expand, correspondent service to non-affiliated banks declines. Being commercial banks, such banks compete with other financial institutions, including their own correspondents, for business. In fact, you may find that they use information you provide them through the correspondent system to compete for your customers, furthering their interests at your expense! Since a bankers' bank cannot deal with the general public, such a conflict of interest cannot occur. Your interests are our interests. Correspondent banking is the sole source of business for a bankers' bank, making your satisfaction and well-being our top priority.

Banks own us, bankers comprise our Board of Directors, and our staff has decades of banking experience. Owned and operated by community bankers, we design our services to provide you with the type of correspondent service you want and need to effectively serve your community. In addition, with no need for tellers, drive-ins, safe-deposit boxes, etc. our operating overhead is less, enabling us to price our services at a more sensible level than our competitors.
